Deep Relaxation Through Float Therapy

Float therapy, also known as sensory deprivation therapy, is a type of relaxation treatment where you float in a pod or tank filled with warm water and a high concentration of Epsom salt. The water is set at body temperature, which makes it hard to feel the difference between the water and your skin, creating a sensation of floating weightlessly.

The idea behind float therapy is that it helps reduce stress and anxiety, relieve muscle tension, and promote mental clarity. Because the tank is isolated from external stimuli (like light and sound), it creates a deeply peaceful and calming environment. Some people use it for relaxation, while others find it beneficial for things like recovery after workouts or improving sleep.

During a float session, you might find yourself in a meditative state, as your senses are reduced and you’re left to focus on your breathing or just let your mind wander. Many find the experience super calming and almost like a mental reset.

It’s not just for stress—it can also help with things like muscle soreness, insomnia, and even improving focus. You just step into the pod, lie back, and float!

The Benefits

  • Relaxes muscles and relieves pain: Floating in warm, salty water takes pressure off your joints and muscles, helping to ease tension and soreness.

  • Reduces stress and anxiety: The quiet, dark, weightless environment lowers stress hormones and creates a deep sense of calm.

  • Improves sleep: Many people report better, deeper sleep after floating because the body and mind are fully relaxed.

  • Boosts focus and creativity: Without distractions, your brain can think more clearly, helping with problem-solving, ideas, and creativity.

  • Supports meditation and mindfulness: The sensory-free space makes it easier to meditate and focus on your thoughts or breathing.

  • Aids recovery: Athletes or active people use float pods to help muscles recover faster and reduce fatigue after exercise.

  • Skin and overall health: The Epsom salt in the water can help soothe skin and muscles, promoting overall wellness.

What to avoid

  • Before Floating

  • Don’t eat a heavy meal right before; a light snack is fine.

  • Avoid caffeine or energy drinks—they can make it hard to relax.

  • Skip alcohol or drugs—they can be dangerous in the pod and interfere with relaxation.

  • During Floating

  • Don’t open your eyes underwater—it can irritate them from the salt.

  • Avoid sudden movements—try to stay still to float properly and relax.

  • Don’t get water in your nose or ears intentionally—it can be uncomfortable or lead to infections.

  • Avoid using electronics or talking—it defeats the purpose of sensory deprivation.

  • After Floating

  • Don’t rush into hot showers immediately—rinse off the salt, but let your body adjust slowly.

  • Avoid intense activity right after—give your body and mind time to enjoy the relaxed state.

Health & Safety Tips for Floating

Before Your Session

  • Shower thoroughly to remove oils, dirt, or lotions; this keeps the water clean.

  • Avoid eating heavy meals, caffeine, or alcohol right before floating.

  • Check with a doctor if you have medical conditions like heart problems, seizures, severe skin conditions, or pregnancy.

  • Remove jewelry and contact lenses to avoid irritation or damage.

During Floating

  • Enter the pod carefully—the floor can be slippery.

  • Stay relaxed and still; sudden movements can splash water.

  • Avoid getting water in your nose, eyes, or ears. Earplugs can help if you’re sensitive.

  • Listen to your body—if you feel dizzy, nauseous, or uncomfortable, exit slowly.

After Floating

  • Rinse off the salt to avoid skin or eye irritation.

  • Take time to relax before jumping into physical activity.

  • Hydrate—floating can be dehydrating due to the salt water.

General Safety

  • Never float alone if you feel unwell; most centers have staff for emergencies.

  • Report any skin infections or open wounds before floating—they can get irritated.

  • Follow pod instructions and staff guidance at all times.
